Engagement sessions are truly my favorite! It always surprises me not only how well I get to know my couple, but also how much fun we have.
As a photographer, my “rule” is that you pick the place and I pick the time. We will head out and meet for about an hour and a half before the sun sets for the perfect light and shoot until the sun goes down or we all feel that “we’ve got it.”
Keep reading for my top five tips for an amazing engagement session!
1. Place
Is there anywhere that is special to the two of you? A hiking trail? Downtown area? Thats always a great way to help decide where we should shoot. I am always open to offering suggestions! Living in the Phoenix area, we are plentiful in desert beauty!
2. Dress
Coordinating outfits is the way to go! I always suggest going a little fancier for your engagement shoot because when else do you get to do this in your life?! In general, you cannot go wrong with neutrals (think navy, gray, white). If one person is wearing a lot of color and patterns, maybe put the other person in neutral. Try to stay away from tiny patterns as they don’t show up in photos but bold jewelry, scarves, and shoes tend to do well in front of the camera! You can also schedule your hair and makeup trail for the same day, it’s the perfect excuse to get dolled up. I want you to feel like a million bucks! If you’d like, two outfits is fun too! I always suggest doing the more casual outfit first and ending the session on a more formal note.
3. Fun
This shoot is suppose to be so much fun! The first 10-15 minutes will be getting use to being in front of the camera but after that, it’s cake! I want you to enjoy and be confident! Get ready for lots of nuzzling and nose to nose action 😉 I think you’ll get the hang of it pretty quick!
4. Trust
I dont expect you to be a pro at this but I think you’ll be great anyways! I think real couples are the best. I’ll show you what to do with your hands but I’ll ask take a step back and let you guys do you! Allow me to be creative and trust that if something looks funny, I’ll let you know!
5. Time
Please be on time, we are depending 100% on the sun for the perfect light and I want to make sure we have as much time together as possible and beautiful sun light. It’s always good to plan on arriving 15-20 minutes early, buffer time for traffic and/or getting lost is always a great idea.
That’s about it for now!! To find out why engagement sessions are so important, check out my blog on that over here.
I can’t wait to get to know you and your fiancé!
